January
- January 8 – 52-year-old Guido Maldonado is killed when he is crushed between a 2005 CAT Waste Handler and a tractor trailer at the Lorton Landfill in Lorton.[1]
- January 8 – 18-year-old Venus Romero Iraheta pleads guilty to murder for fatally stabbing 15-year-old Damaris A. Reyes Rivas in Springfield on January 8, 2017.[2]
- January 21 – 23-year-old Walther Rubio Valladarez unintentionally kills himself when he loses control of the Honda Civic he is driving and crashes into a tree in the 6700 block of Telegraph Road in Alexandria.[3]
- January 27 – 36-year-old Frege Adous unintentionally kills himself when he loses control of the 2014 Honda CR-V he is driving and crashes into a tree in the 8400 block of Alban Road in Springfield.[4]
- January 29 – 64-year-old Charles Petrello is killed in a house fire at 4105 Mount Echo Lane in Fairfax.[5]
February
- February 14 – 18-year-old Uriel Espinosa Cruz fatally shoots 17-year-old Matthew Ortega near a vacant house on Jeb Stuart Square in the Faircrest neighborhood of Centreville.[6]
- February 16 – Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department Chief Richard R. Bowers, Jr. announces his retirement, effective April 30.[7]
March
- March 15 – 47-year-old truck driver Bobby Blevins, Jr. is electrocuted when the tarp of the dump truck he is driving touches overhead power lines at Mordor Drive and Furnace Road in Lorton.[8]
- March 15 – 22-year-old Manvinder Aulakh shoots and kills 21-year-old Bao Hung Van to settle a dispute at the Vapology 101 store at 10132C Colvin Run Road in the Leigh Corners office park in Great Falls.[9][10]
April
- April 24 – John J. Caussin, Jr. is appointed acting chief of the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department by the Board of Supervisors. Caussin's appointment is effective on April 30.
May
- May 18 – 9-year-old Wesley C. Lipicky is fatally injured when his head is crushed by a motorized room partition in the gym at the Franconia Elementary School in Alexandria. He dies of his injuries in the hospital later that evening.[11]
- May 21 – 22-year-old Chardnay Southern fatally stabs her uncle, 30-year-old Courtney Southern, to settle an argument at the family home at 8015 Steadman Street in the Mount Vernon Valley neighborhood in Hybla Valley. Courtney Southern is taken to the hospital, where he is pronounced dead.[12]
- May 30 – Three-year-old Syed Zaidi is killed when he falls from a bedroom window of a 26th-floor apartment at 5601 Seminary Road in the Skyline Towers apartment complex in Baileys Crossroads.[13][14][15]
July
- July 4 – 40-year-old clerk Resham Bajgain is murdered by 19-year-old Mohammed Abukar Abdullahi during a bungled robbery at the Sunoco station at 13300 Franklin Farm Road in the Franklin Farm Village Center in Herndon.[16]
- July 10 – 78-year-old Ok Soon Kim is struck and killed as she attempts to cross Columbia Pike at Gallows Road in Annandale.[17]
- July 10 – 17-year-old Conner McGowan is fatally injured when he loses control of the speeding 2005 Jeep he is driving and crashes into a tree on Fairfax Station Road near Colewood Estates Road in Clifton. McGowan is taken to the hospital, where he dies that night.[18][19]
- July 10 – The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors appoints John S. Butler as chief of the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department, effective September 1.[20]
- July 15 – 21-year-old Tonnisha McCoy and 23-year-old Joselyn Herndon are killed when the driver of the 2004 Acura MDX they are riding in drunkenly loses control of the speeding car and crashes on the Fairfax County Parkway near Walnut Branch Road in Reston.[21]
- July 23 – 63-year-old Beverly Krizanovic is killed when a 60-foot tall tree falls on her house at 5964 Burnside Landing Drive in Burke.[22]
August
- August 5 – 33-year-old Veronica Youngblood shoots her two daughters in her apartment at Post Tysons Corner in McLean, killing her younger child, 5-year-old Brooklynn, and fatally injuring her older daughter. The older daughter dies of her wounds on August 11.[23]
- August 13 – A two-year-old toddler is killed when he falls from the balcony of a 24th-floor apartment in the Skyline Towers apartment complex in Baileys Crossroads.[24]
September
- September 3 – 36-year-old Dayssy Avalo is struck and killed as she attempts to cross Arlington Boulevard near Graham Road in Falls Church.[25]
- September 5 – 42-year-old Noera Ayaz fatally shoots her two sons, 11-year-old Tihami and 8-year-old Miraj, then commits suicide in the family home at 1088 Safa Street in Herndon.[26]
October
- October 2 – 75-year-old Philip John Dietz is struck and killed by a 2002 BMW as he attempts to cross Dolley Madison Boulevard at the intersection of Madison McLean Drive in McLean.[27]
- October 25 – 72-year-old Herbert James, Jr. is struck and killed by a 2013 Toyota Corolla as he attempts to cross Beulah Street at the intersection of Kingstowne Commons Drive in Alexandria.[28]
- October 26 – 46-year-old Hirute Siyum is struck and killed by a motorcyclist riding a 2016 Suzuki motorcycle as she runs across Old Keene Mill Road at its intersection with Field Master Drive in Springfield.[29]
