Groveton Substation

The Groveton Substation of the Fairfax County Police Department operated from 1948 to 1982.

Located at 6210 N. Kings Highway, the station was the first substation of the department. It opened on November 3, 1948, under the command of Captain James M. Mahoney, who was assisted by Lieutenant Richard F. Utz.[1][2]

In March 1958, command of the station was assumed by Lieutenant Stanley H. Dodson, who was promoted to Captain on June 1, 1959.[3]

The station was later commanded by Captain Herbert Hudson.

On December 2, 1981, retired Navy Captain Cecil E. Harris committed suicide by hanging himself in one of the detention cells in the station, and was found early the next morning.[4]

The Groveton substation closed in the Fall of 1982 with the opening of the Mount Vernon District Station.[2]
