Jessica A. Hudson

Jessica Allyson "Jessie" Hudson is the director of the Fairfax County Public Library system.

Early life and education

Hudson grew up in the city of Fairfield, California.[1] She attended Solano County Community College, then completed her BS in Business Administration at Sacramento State University in 2008. In 2010, Hudson took her masters in library science from San Jose State University.

Career

At the age of 15, a conversation with a neighbor led to Hudson becoming a departmental aide for the Solano County Library.[2] From 2001 to 2006, she worked first at the Fairfield and Suisun branches, and later as a library assistant at the Springstowne branch.

In 2006, Hudson moved to Sacramento County and became the branch manager for the Penryn Library of the Placer County Library system. eventually moving into the position of Branch Manager of the Meadow Vista and Applegate branches.

Following her graduation from San Jose State, Hudson was appointed county librarian for Tehama County, California on December 7, 2010 and was offered a two-year contract.[3] Hudson began running the three-library system on January 3, 2011.

Facing the loss of over $20,000 in state-provided funds, Hudson announced the planned closure of the Los Molinos branch at a county budget meeting on June 28, 2011, giving the small town a consolation prize of a bookmobile fashioned from a discarded transit bus.[4] Los Molinos residents successfully pressured the Board of Supervisors to provide the $11,670 in funds to keep the library open.[5]

On November 22, 2011, Hudson submitted her resignation to the Tehama County Board of Supervisors, effective December 7.[6]

From December 2011 to March 2014, Hudson was county librarian of the six-branch Nevada County, California library.

In March 2014, Hudson was named County Librarian in Contra Costa County, California.[7][8] She took over the 27-branch system on April 14, replacing acting librarian Cathy Sanford.[8]

Hudson was appointed as the director of the Fairfax County Public Library system by the Library Board of Trustees on April 20, 2016.[9] The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors confirmed her appointment at their April 26 meeting, and Hudson began in her new position on June 13.[10][11]
