Events that took place in Fairfax County in August, 1988:
- August 6 – 31-year-old computer technician John H. Toland is shot to death in his car at the end of Brim Lane in Centreville by David E. Petruska.[1][2] Toland had hooked up with Petruska at a rest stop on Interstate 66 and had agreed to pay Petruska $20 in exchange for being allowed to fellate him.[3] After Toland finished sucking his cock, Petruska got out of the car, walked over to the driver's side and attempted to carjack Toland, but instead shot him twice in the head.[3] Toland's corpse is discovered early the next morning.[1]
- August 7 – 20-year-old Michael Thurston drowns in the Fairfax County Water Authority's reservoir in Lorton. His corpse is recovered from the 100-foot-deep former quarry the following day.[4][5]
- August 9 – 35-year-old Hadiqa A. Bashar is shot to death by her 47-year-old husband Ghulam in her home at 3406 Slade Court in Falls Church.[6]
- August 14 – Following his arrest on a charge of public drunkeness at his house in Reston, 48-year-old guitarist Roy Buchanan is either murdered or commits suicide and is found hanged in his cell at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center.[7]
- August 30 – 30-year-old John M. Malvin beats and mortally injures his 3-month-old son Justin at the family home on Sleepy Hollow Road in Falls Church. Justin is taken to the Fairfax Hospital, where he dies later that evening.[8]
