Events that took place in Fairfax County in September, 1988:
- September 16 – 30-year-old Ellwood Smale shoots his estranged wife Shari to death, then commits suicide in her apartment in the Bent Tree Apartments in Centreville. Their corpses are discovered on September 19, along with their 17-month-old son Eric, who had entertained himself by crawling around the decomposing bodies of his dead parents and was dehydrated but otherwise unharmed.[1][2]
