Lorton is an unincorporated town and census-designated place in Fairfax County.
Lorton was originally founded as Lorton Valley, so named by Joseph Plaskett, the first postmaster. He had petitioned for a post office to be added to his general store, and opened on November 11, 1875.
The Noman M. Cole, Jr., Pollution Control Plant along with the I-95 Landfill Complex is responsible for the smell in Lorton.
