Lake Barton

Lake Barton is an 11-acre man-made lake in Burke.

The lake is created by the impoundment of the Sideburn Branch by the 25-foot high Pohick Creek Dam #2, an earthen embankment dam which was constructed under the federal Watershed Protection and Flood Prevention Act and completed in 1978.

In anticipation of Hurricane Floyd, Fairfax County public works employees opened the floodgates of the dam on September 15, 1999. However, poor weather conditions prevented the employees from returning the following day, and by the time the employees did return on September 17, the lake was completely drained.[1] The lake was mostly refilled by November 1999.[2]

The dam was upgraded in 2011 to meet more stringent state design and safety standards.[3]
