- September 3 – 53-year-old Kelly M. Scott is found dead in his cell at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center.[1][2]
- September 7 – 17-year-old Maurice A. Berger is shot to death in the 9700 block of Hagel Circle in the Terrace Town Homes of Gunston development of Lorton when he and 18-year-old Daniel Winkfield attempt to rob an 18-year-old Manassas Park man.[3][4]
- September 9 – 23-year-old Andre C. Wilkins is sentenced to 70 years in prison for fatally shooting 22-year-old Marquel L. Davis and wounding another man in the Hybla Valley area of Alexandria on November 18, 2015.[5]
- September 19 – Fairfax County Public Schools Superintendent Karen K. Garza tenders her resignation from FCPS, effective December 16.
