William H. Miles, Jr.

William H. "Willie" Miles, Jr. was a 56-year-old retiree who was murdered in Bailey's Crossroads on December 21, 1979.[1]

Miles' Cadillac had broken down near the Alexandria border, so he abandoned it and began walking to his home at 5736 Poplar Lane.[1] Several hours after he was last seen, a burglary was interrupted at Miles' home and his keys were located at the site, leading Fairfax County Police Investigator Colin J. Kozloff to speculate that Miles had been the victim of foul play.[1]

Kozloff's speculations were well-founded, as a telephone tip nearly two years later led police to dig for several hours at the site of a partially demolished house on nearby Moncure Avenue, where they found Miles' skeletal remains buried under ten feet of dirt.[2][3]
