Stan G. Barry

Stan G. Barry was the Sheriff of Fairfax County from 1999 to 2013.

Barry was elected to the office in 1999.

In 2009, Barry filed paperwork with the county announcing his intention to participate in the county's Deferred Retirement Option Program (DROP) program, meaning that he intended to retire from the Sheriff's Department within the next three years.[1] However, he sought and won re-election in 2011, defeating Republican Bill A. Cooper, III.

On May 21, 2013, Barry announced he would retire in July for personal reasons.[2] Lieutenant Colonel Mark Sites was appointed acting sheriff by Judge Dennis Smith.[3]
