- September 5 – 30-year-old Robert W. Corbett hangs himself in his cell at the Fairfax County Jail.[1]
- September 7 – 80-year-old Bayard D. Evans, owner of the Evans Farm Inn restaurant in McLean, is killed in a car crash on Utterback Store Road in Great Falls.[2]
- September 17 – 25-year-old William N. Tumarkin and 33-year-old Marian M. Sheets are shot to death in their shared home at 3708 Rose Lane in Annandale.[3][4]
- September 17 – 44-year-old Marvin W. Humphreys fatally shoots his 42-year-old wife Lynda, then commits suicide in his home in the Lake Barcroft neighborhood of Falls Church.[3]
- September 28 – Ungrateful 35-year-old house guest Thomas M. Boyle murders 49-year-old Douglas H. Johnson with an axe at Johnson's house on Calvert Street in the Annandale Acres neighborhood of Annandale.[5][6]
