Garfield Bailey

Garfield Bailey was a 23-year-old Fairfax County Police officer who mortally wounded himself when he shot himself in the head with his service revolver at his home at 4828 S. 29th Street in Arlington on August 27, 1971.[1]

Bailey had joined the department on August 7. He was off-duty and drinking in his apartment when he pulled the trigger of his revolver with a single round in the chamber and shot himself. Bailey was taken to Arlington Hospital, where he died two hours later.[1]

While officially ruled an accident, the circumstances of the shooting strongly imply that Bailey was playing Russian roulette.[1]
