Arlington County

Arlington County is a county in Northern Virginia.

The county was part of the District of Columbia that was retroceded to Virginia in 1846. Following retrocession, it was known as Alexandria County.

To eliminate confusion of the county with the independent City of Alexandria, the county was renamed Arlington in 1922.

Government

Arlington uses the county manager plan of government, adopted by popular vote on November 4, 1930. The board consists of five members elected at-large, who then select one of their number as chairman.
