Eleanor U. Kennedy Adult Emergency Shelter

The Eleanor U. Kennedy Adult Emergency Shelter is a homeless shelter in the Fort Belvoir area of Alexandria.

The 50-bed shelter is operated by New Hope Housing.

The shelter opened in 1986 in a converted water treatment plant as the South County Community Shelter.[1][2] The building, originally built in 1918 and known as building 1400, had been disused since the 1960's.[3] The unused building was leased to Route One Corridor Housing, as New Hope was then known, by the Army at no cost and also renovated by them.[4] In 1989, the shelter was renamed in honor of Eleanor U. Kennedy, a local activist and advocate for the poor and homeless.[2]

On October 30, 2013, Fairfax County Police officers fatally shot 28-year-old James Bryant at the shelter.[5]
