Lewis H. Shumate

Lewis H. Shumate (1903 – June 25, 1987) was a Fairfax County Police officer from 1942 to 1966.

Shumate was born in McDowell, Virginia, the son of Robert L. and Lena M. Shumate.

Shumate served in the Army, then worked for a year as a deputy sheriff before joining the FCPD in 1942.

When Sergeant Cecil Brown was promoted to detective sergeant in September, 1947, Shumate was promoted to sergeant to replace him.[1]

After 24 years of service, Shumate retired as a Captain in 1966.[2]
