Inova Mount Vernon Hospital

Inova Mount Vernon Hospital is a community hospital in the Mount Vernon area of Alexandria.

Funds for construction of the hospital, initially estimated to cost $10 million, were included in a $32.5 million dollar bond referendum approved in 1967.[1][2]

Despite the recommendations of both the Fairfax County Planning Commission and the Fairfax County Hospital and Health Center Commission to purchase a 68-acre site on Lockheed Boulevard, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors instead voted on June 11, 1969, to purchase a smaller 40-acre site to the east in Gum Springs as a location for the proposed $14.4 million hospital.[3][4]

Construction of the hospital actually began in 1973, and the hospital, completed at a cost of $24 million, opened on October 26, 1976.[5][6]

The effect of the new hospital was quickly felt throughout the Alexandria area, with Alexandria Hospital closing 40 of their existing beds, and the smaller Circle Terrace Hospital closing 10 of their beds.[5]
