Events that took place in Fairfax County in 1861:
June
- June 17 – Disregarding warnings from a local resident, a train carrying Union soldiers steams into an ambush on the Alexandria, Loudon and Hampshire Railroad line near Vienna. Eight soldiers of the 1st Ohio Infantry are killed when the cars they are riding are struck by cannon fire.
- June 21 – While on picket duty near Falls Church, 48-year-old Captain and Sucker First-Class Abram G. Kellogg of the 2nd Connecticut Infantry is enticed by two local sisters, 18-year-old Artemisia D. Scott and 20-year-old America V. Scott, to escort them to their home behind Confederate lines. Having seen the sisters safely home, he is invited into their house, where they delay him until Confederate troops can arrive and take him prisoner.[1][2][3][4]
