Robert J. Wells

Robert Jarrett Wells (Sep. 22, 1924 – October 1, 1996) was a 72-year-old retired music teacher who was fatally stabbed by 53-year-old Benjamin W. Brown after Wells' golden retriever, Sam, scared Brown on a Reston bike path on September 30, 1996.[1][2]

Wells was letting Sam run free along the bike path when Brown happened along on his bicycle. A vigorous debate over leashing etiquette ensued between Wells and Brown, with Wells emphasizing his position by striking Brown several times with his walking stick, and Brown ultimately settling the matter by stabbing Wells twice with a small pocket knife.[3]

The mortally injured Wells walked and crawled to a nearby neighbor's house seeking help, and was flown to Inova Fairfax Hospital, where he died about four hours later.[4]
