Michael DeGroot

Michael James DeGroot was a 25-year-old construction worker who was killed, along with 25-year-old Robert J. Baker, when the 17-foot deep trench they were laying sewer pipe in collapsed at the site of the Chaconas Estates neighborhood off Gallows Road in Annandale on July 18, 1978.[1][2]

DeGroot and Baker were childhood friends and roommates who, upon hearing they could make as much as $5.00 or more an hour, had started working for the S. O. Jennings Construction Company the previous day.[1][2]

As compensation for his death, DeGroot's family received a $1,000 workman's compensation payment towards the cost of his funeral.[2]
