Burke Lake Park is a 614.16-acre countywide park in Fairfax Station.
The park surrounds the 218-acre Lake Burke, which is owned by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.
Planning for the park began in 1959, when Fairfax County agreed to make available 223 acres of county-owned land for the park, upon which the Virginia Fish and Game Commission agreed to construct a dam if the remaining 155 acres needed for the park could be acquired.[1] This required the Fairfax County Park Authority to attempt to raise about $35,000 before December 31 to purchase the land that would not otherwise be acquired via donation.
Gerald T. Halpin, the vice president of Atlantic Research Corporation, agreed to loan the FCPA $35,000 for one year without interest to secure the land.[2]
Incidents
On July 8, 1972, 16-year-old Boy Scout Conrad Hugel was killed by a lightning strike as he stood under a tree while sheltering from a storm.[3]
