Alexander M. Cochran, III

Alexander McKie "Al" Cochran, III was a 27-year-old Virginia State Trooper who was murdered near his townhouse in the 9800 block of Hagel Circle in Lorton by Larry L. Gill, who shot him in the back and head with a shotgun on January 15, 1987.[1]

Having been excused from participating in an FBI anti-drug detail that day by his sergeant, Cochran was off-duty and unloading groceries upon returning from the store when he heard Gill shoot his brother-in-law, Gregory B. Jividen. Cochran grabbed his service weapon and found Jividen shot in the courtyard of the townhouse development where he lived. He turned to run to his cruiser to radio for help and had just reached the fender of his car when Gill shot him.[2]

Gill murdered Army Sergeant Dennis R. Kief shortly thereafter.[1]

Cochran had been taking helicopter lessons in Manassas, with the immediate goal of flying a helicopter for the National Guard unit he had been a member of for eight years prior to his death. His ultimate goal was flying Medivac for the Virginia State police.[2]
